Yes, the "D" means it had an extra door open position. And
there were further variants, such as the inclusion of a door
selector valve on the brake valve body casting, or a treadle
set position. Dave G. from OERM once distributed at ARM his
list of every known "M" series brake valve from M-1 to ME43
and it was about 100 pages.
