The problem with current NYCTS operations as opposed to traditional service patterns is that most of the NYCTS lines operate as a combination of local and express operations. At the present time, the only lines that operate as true locals during their entire hours of operation are the #1, C, G, L, M, R and W. Even the R shuttle is not a complete local 24/7 since N/B R shuttles operate express between 59 St and 36 St in Bkln to facilitate turning at 36 St. The rest of the NYCTA lines vary between being locals in one borough, and express in another and operate in different patterns depending on the time of day. It used to be that at a station designated as an "express" stop it was assumed that all trains stop there. In the outer boroughs stations served only by express trains operating as local trains were still designated as "express" stations since there were trains operating there which operate express in Manhattan. This was originally the case with the IND N/O 168 St where the AA terminated at 168 St and the A express continued to 207 St making all stops and in Brooklyn until the Fulton St Line opened to Euclid Ave in 1948. At that time A trains ran express during rush hours and E trains were extended from Hudson Terminal to Bway/ENY running local. At that point the stations on Fulton St had to be designated as local and express and even then an express station was considered an "all stop" since AFAIK, there are no stations on the NYCTS where express trains stop and local trains bypass. |
