It's not quote unquote "instant" but somewhere in the area of 1-2 seconds typically. Since operators almost always coast for at least a second or two before grabbing brake, the use of the spotting wire takes care of the setup time while coasting rather than when brake is grabbed = quicker response once the handle is actually moved to service brake range. |
