I'd actually camp in San Diego

We stayed in Capistrano Beach, roughly halfway between the two. Five miles from the San Juan Capistrano station was pretty convenient, & parking was FREE. Apparently there is a dispute between SJC & whoever over maintaining the central parking meter machine. The box was covered with a bag with a lengthy finger pointing explanation.
