One of the reasons that the 1950s generation of subway cars were retired so early was due to the unique system of blower cooled resistors on the GE equipped R-16s through 22s. This system was prone to failure unlike the air cooled resistors of the earlier and later cars and the westinghouse equipped cars and as a result the MTA chose to scrap those cars earlier proving that newer isn't always better. |
