I think many outside people connect NYC subway cars to the colorful numbers/letters.

True. Also, I bet most people (including New Yorkers) wouldn't be too thrown by seeing an R-62/A as a 6 since they did run there for many years and may run there again in the future. Accuracy will probably be thrown out the window in parts anyway. I think the real reason is that the MTA wants to use this film to sport a new image to the country about what their subway is like. And they only want to show the newest and most modern looking equipment they have. This wouldn't be the first time since the last Taking of Pelhem displayed a train in near-mint condition when in reality a 6 train at that time would have likely been heavily tagged at least on the inside. And for The French Connection, they insisted that R-42s be used since they had less graffiti.
