Thanks for the input, guys... My point being that an "experienced" T/O would know the distance beyond the platform where the bumper sits and would know AT WHAT SPEED to approach... barring any unforseen BRAKING DIFFICULTIES with the consist in question, it almost sounds like the T/O was either going too fast, or lacked adequate braking maneuvers. (unless s/he downright mistook the track it was on and assumed those tracks continued out on to Brooklyn)

(and since it's OUTSIDE the station, then I imagine the bumper sits in the tunnel itself).

Sorry to hear about this incident, regardless.
