Electrification requires a large capital investment in infrastructure. Clearly needed for busy lines, but hard to justify rationally for (say) Greenport or Montauk

Why would that be? Costs of maintaining two separate fleets would be higher than costs of electrification. If bus companies can run out of the Hamptons and out of the north fork frequently, then so can frequent rail service.

Dare i suggest - very quietly - DMUs?
