But in a situation like Bushwick, where the vast majority of stores fled by the 1980s, gentrification helps to bring more stores to the area. People forget, many big retailers have cheaper prices. So, in essance, the prescence of chains actually helps the poor. Also, many smaller stores open up as well. Have you been to Park Slope recently? It has small stores. So does UWS and UES. I do agree that we need to preserve small buisness, but that could be better done by tax breaks and making BIDs small buisness only zones. |
