Through time, and learning we have learned better waysAnd you can thank Jane Jacobs for that. Her book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" (which I thought wasn't nearly as well written as the Power Broker) was mostly responsible for the change in thinking that Projects were nothing more than vertical slums that replaced horizontal slums. The thinking before Jacobs was that the increased light and air that the projects afforded would remove the slums. Jacobs wrote about the importance of neighborhoods and sidewalks and sidewalk activity and its relation to crime which no one ever even thought about before her and that it would take more than more light and air and parks to remove the slums and the crime. |
