I heard of the Riis Book, but never read it. If you haven't been to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. I would recommend it to you. I still think, until you are inside one of them and hear the stories of the guides, you can't really understand what it was like no matter how many pictures you've seen. I thought the four room apartment I grew up in that was built in the 1920's was cramped. It was a "palace" compared to the old-law tenements. |
