The W does serve a purpose, and there are decent loads between Canal and 57/7 (Even to Astoria during the rush hours).My biggest gripe with the W is the way it's handled at Whitehall, an inefficient pocket terminal that only backs up many southbound R trains at Rector. One southbound W would sit at Rector and wait for clearance from his leader leaving Whitehall. This, in turn, delays the R behind it. I also see no sense on why the last 3 scheduled W trains run to 86th Street on the N Sea Beach. I would think the W would be more useful if it was extended to Kings Highway during rush hours (6:45 AM to 8:45 AM and 4:30 PM to 6:15 PM) so the bulk of the R trains during rush hours would not be backed up. (But this may back up some N trains too at Bay Parkway.) |
