Until 1976, it ran 24/7 from Continental to Smith/9th. Between 1976 and 1987, it terminated at Queens Plaza at nights. From 1987 to 1992, it terminated at Queens Plaza evenings, nights and weekends (when the R became the 24/7 local). From 1992 to 1999, it ran to 179th St at night (replacing the R). Sometime in 1994, the 63rd St. connector construction project forced the G to terminate at Court Sq on weekends. Service was usually 6 R32's, then 6 R46's after 1992.

The F was routed to 57th St (then Queensbridge) in May of 1987 at night. For a while, the E served Hillside Ave overnights. After Archer Ave opened, the R was the only service at night. After the October 1992 service cuts forced the R to run as a shuttle in Brooklyn at night, the G was extended from Queens Plaza all the way to 179th to compensate. There were LOUD complaints about this service pattern, but it survived for almost 7 years.
