Tracksionmotor got it basically right but he reversed Brake Pipeand Straight Air Pipe. The Straight Air Pipe is used for normal service braking, while the Brake Pipe is a failsafe for emergency braking only (normally contains pressure, if the pressure vents, the train goes into emergency). It's very similar to the system used on tractor-trailers. |
