I already knew most of what you wrote. In 1900, the IRT started talks with the Manhattan Elevated,which resulted in the leasing of the latter to the former, on April 1st, 1903. What I always wondered was why the Manhattan Elevated didn't consider subway type third rail to begin with, when it contracted with General Electric and Westinghouse to electrify its equipment and structures on May 1st, 1901. It was already in talks with the new Interborough. I think both companies knew from the onset that they couldn't exist separate from each other. Perhaps, if the IRT had pressed the issue, there would have been one subway type third rail for all routes. That was my question, Joe! |
