Eastern Parkway station on the Broadway-Brooklyn Line is opened.


Of the three stations now connected as "Broadway Junction", this one opened first, and was called "Eastern Parkway" because when it opened, the only exit was at the south (west) end, with stairs down to the mezzanine and street at Eastern Parkway, the predominant street in the area. (This mezzanine and exit are now closed to the public.) Until fairly recently, there were "Eastern Parkway" signs at this end of the platforms.

A decade or so later the 14th St-Canarsie Line opened there as "Broadway Junction", because that line actually intersected with Broadway, unlike the first line which ran along Broadway, so Broadway wasn't in its station name.

Over a decade later (delayed because of WWII) the IND station opened, as "Broadway - East New York", because it too intersected with Broadway, but from a different direction. This station included the station house, now used by all three lines. The only way to exit the original Eastern Parkway station (J,Z) now is at the north (east) end by going upstairs to the mezzanine and then down to the station house.

The subway maps of the times included all three station names, one for each line. When it became the TA standard to name interconnected stations with the same name (like "Court Square"), all three were named "Broadway Junction".






The "East NY" tiles were replaced with "Junction", while the "Broadway" remained untouched. If you look carefully at the O in both words you can see that the font is different, a good copy but not exact.
