June 19, 1955 - from the Book of Last RunsService on Chicago's 4-Cottage Grove streetcar route was discontinued. Base service had been provided by the Blue Geese, Chicago's prewar PCC car fleet. They were transferred to the 49-Western route and because they had been converted to one-man operation in 1952, weekend streetcar operation on Western was resumed after bustitution had been implemented earlier. The other two remaining streetcar lines - 36 Broadway-State and 22 Clark-Wentworth, used two-man Green Hornets with weekend bustitution. As a footnote, a group of Green Hornets were converted to optional one-man/two-man operation to supplement base service on Western Ave. They had, "Enter at front" signs showing when they ran as one-man cars. |
