7 train switches

Posted by LuchAAA on Sun Mar 15 18:28:00 2026

So the switches on the 7 line between 82 and 74 are useful.

One connects M track to 1 track (Manhattan-bound or "southbound").

It's a "facing point" switch on M track which means it's "trailing point" on 1 track.

One day a Manhattan-bound 7 train went out of service at 74 and supervision had to turn the train back to Main Street or Corona Yard.

The train operator switched ends in the station (74th Street) and went back to the Flushing-bound or "northbound" operating position and operated the train against traffic, then over the switch to M track and away he went.

The move, of taking the train out of service, had to be done this way at 74 due to the current GO where 7 trains are operating on the middle track from Woodside to Queens Plaza.

Obviously it delayed Manhattan-bound 7 trains for a few minutes while the train was taken out of service and the train operator switched from the Manhattan-bound to the Flushing-bound operating position.

For the most part, 7 trains are just so slow middays because construction flaggers are everywhere.
