Tuscarora Rail Cars of Note No. 2

The Air-Conditioned R-17’s

The R-17’s were a class of 400 rapid transit cars for service on the IRT Division of the New York City Subway System. They were built by the Saint Louis Car Company between 1955 and 1956. They were numbered 6500-6899. Ten of these cars, 6800-6809 were equipped with six air-conditioning unit per car. They had unique baffle type fan covers and fiberglass bucket seats. The a/c units proved impractical and were replaced with standard fans in the early sixties.
