1908 – from The Book of First Runs


The Hudson & Manhattan Railroad begins operation between 19th Street in Manhattan and Hoboken, NJ.

On or about this date a free passageway is opened between the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station (E, F, now E and M) of the IND Queens Line and the Court Square station (G) of the IND Crosstown Line.

6th Avenue (EL) express service began on January 17, 1916. Trains made all stops on the Sixth Avenue Line itself but ran express on the center track of the Ninth Avenue Line between 53rd Street and 125th Street. (Extended to 155th Street on July 7, 1918.)

During the 1930’s 6th Avenue Express ran during the rush hours in the direction of traffic between Burnside Avenue and Rector Street. Trains left Burnside Avenue from 7 to 9 AM, Monday through Saturday. Northbound trains departed Rector Street from about 4:30 to 6:30 PM on weekdays and about 12 noon to 2 PM on Saturdays. The consist during the weekday rush hours was seven MUDC’s with an occasional train of Gate cars. Likewise the Saturday AM trains ran with five Gate cars while the PM trains ran with five MUDC’s.

The marker lights were Red-Green in both directions except for a few PM rush trains that ran through to Woodlawn Road. These carried Yellow-Yellow markers.
