DC Streetcar service ending on H Street

After a decade of service, streetcars are set to make their final runs throughout the H Street Corridor, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) said this week.

DDOT said DC Streetcar service will end on March 31, 2026, encouraging people to look into other travel options to use after that date, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA’s) D20 Metrobus.

DDOT said it is working with WMATA to povide (sic) people alternatives.

“DDOT acknowledges and appreciates the contributions of riders, employees, and community members who have supported the DC Streetcar during its decade of service to the District,” the department stated in a news release.

DDOT said prior to the end of the closure, there would be some adjustments to service. Those adjustments go into effect on Jan. 4, 2026. The include the elimination of Sunday service. There will be revised operating hours with 20-minute headways:
  • Monday to Friday, 6 a.m – 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.

Old news. Original plans announced in May of 2024 had it being shutting down in the summer of 2027 to be replaced by trolley buses in by late 2028 or mid 2029.

Ironic that it will be shut down less then a week after the 50th anniversary of the opening of the first segment of Metrorail.
