D Concourse – 6th Avenue – Culver Express Time Period: July 1959 The D running as the Concourse – 6th Avenue – Culver Express was in operation from October 1954 to November 1967, a little over thirteen years. This essay will look at the service in the summer of 1959. D trains ran between 205th Street and Coney Island at all times. The route was over the IND Grand Concourse, 8th Avenue and 6th Avenue lines to Broadway-Lafayette Street the same as it is today. Service continued over the IND Houston Street line, the Rutgers Street Tunnel and the South Brooklyn (aka Smith Street) line to Church Avenue and then over the former BMT Culver line. Additional trains ran between 205th Street and Church Avenue on weekdays between 6 AM and 6 PM. There were four round trips on Saturdays between 205th Street and Kings Highway. These trains left 205th Street from 7:30 to 8:30 AM. They departed from Kings Highway from 3:30 to 5 PM. D trains ran express at all times between 145th Street (lower level) and 59th Street. They ran express on the Grand Concourse line between Bedford Park Boulevard and 145th Street on weekdays southbound in morning rush (7-9 AM) and northbound in the evening rush (4-6 PM). Train lengths and equipment: weekday rush and midday 10 cars, evenings 8, midnights 4, Saturday and Sunday daytime 6-8. All trains used R-1/9’s. Marker lights: 205th Street – Coney Island; as Concourse locals Green-Yellow; as Concourse expresses Green-Green. 205th Street – Church Avenue; as Concourse locals Yellow-White; as Concourse expresses White-Yellow. 205th Street – Kings Highway Green-Yellow. Rt. D Grand Concourse – 6th Avenue – Fulton Street Express This service began in October 1957. It ran weekdays only between 205th Street and Euclid Avenue following the same route as the regular D train to Jay Street and then over the IND Fulton Street line to Euclid Avenue. Its purpose was to send five trains a day to the Pitkin Avenue Yard for inspection. Southbound trains left 205th Street at 7:23, 7:39, 7:55 and 8:07 AM. A fifth train left Bedford Park Boulevard at 8:53 AM. Northbound trains left Euclid Avenue at 3:08, 3:32, 3:47, 4:02 and 4:52 PM. These trains ran express between Hoyt Street and Euclid Avenue. Markers: Green-White Note: I believe that at the end of the AM rush several northbound trains ended their runs at Bedford Park Boulevard.
