One of those things where people are scratching their heads wondering why the MTA never kept old-style "block signalling" as a backup should there be any "glitches" in the CBTC system. They did for a while, until they were convinced all the glitches were out. After that the old backup block system was removed. Keeping a full time block system would mean twice the cost - two systems instead of one. Implementing CBTC was already more expensive than replacement of a block system using modern components. Building two systems: CBTC plus a replacement block system would have raised questions. You may start experiencing more CBTC failures on the 14th St Line. Electronic parts have a much shorter lifespan than relays. It's not that they are unreliable. Rather newer parts make them obsolete and finding exact replacements becomes impossible. That lifespan is around 25 years. The 14th St Line's CBTC is nearing the end of its useful life. The same goes for the electronics in the R142's and R143's. Their internal wiring used LON Works. It was obsolete, when it was specified. Finding spare parts will become increasingly more difficult. |
