The cutting key as an aid to retrieving the potions goes back to the BMT steels. The electric portions on the original steels were actually brass plates or “slides” that had to be advanced or “shot” by operating an “advance” position on the uncoupling valve in the M/M’s cab. Retrieving the portion was referred to as “tripping the slide” and it was done by activating a trigger in the back of the drawhead on the car opposite the one from where the slide was shot. You had to do under the car and check for a small rod at the back of the coupler. If the rod were extended the you would trip the slide by pulling the trigger. Otherwise you would have to go to the opposite coupler to tip the slide. In any case, the trigger on the coupler was often hard to pull with your finger so many cutting keys were filed to a chisel point so that they could be inserted in front of the trigger to activate it and trip the slide. |
