I hope, and am working in my home territory to push for, a major change in how we approach transit funding, service levels, and fares. It is long past time to move toward lower, and more universal fares. For comparison to how rider hostile some systems are, vist BART or WMATA's online fare information and compare what a trip costs for mileages that would be within the 5 boros thus a single fare. (And neither of them offer unlimited use passes. MTA led the way when the Metrocards were implemented. Others need to follow. Given that PATH and MTA mostly are tax revenue supported services, the idea that a trip from for instance 72nd & 2nd to Hoboken should cost 2 fares, while 72nd to Coney Island or Brooklyn College only one. |
