So why is interstate travel between NJ/NYS/Conn different from for instance commuting from MD through DC to NoVa? Clearly WMATA (although at gouging fares) at least does offer service. Most simply, I believe the old political boundaries are obsolete given where people choose to live, find work, attend events. "New York" sports teams play in NJ, the PA runs airports in 2 states, around DC, 2 airports are in NoVa, but if you are in some MD suburbs, Thurgood Marshall is easier to access. Few of us care which color the vehicles or operator uniforms are; we just want to go somewhere--easily, reliably, and if possible cheaply.Unification of the larger agencies is just a larger version of "unifying" the IRT, BMT, aIND,MABSTOA. |
