In the olden days, when I used to ride the subway, I'd often take a local just to get a seat, especially if I wasn't in any hurry. If I had occasion to do it again, now that I'm older, I'd be even more inclined to favor a local over an express if I could get a seat. My body just doesn't take the jouncing around hanging on a pole the way it used to-- and the expresses aren't that much faster that the discomfort is worthwhile.

In particular, staying on a Queens Blvd local towards Jamaica was often worthwhile as the train would quickly empty as it progressed, and by the time it got to 71-Continental, the E that I needed to finish the ride was usually empty enough if not to get a seat, at least to have a decent place to stand such as the end of an R-160 cab car for the few stops remaining. In some cases, I knew that I was going to be standing around Jamaica anyway waiting for one of the infrequent trains back to Carle Place, so the express wasn't worth it
