Initially, it operated peak hour runs only. The Coaster used the tri-level Bombardier "lozenge" coaches (ubiquitous to Toronto, Los Angeles and other mostly Western commuter rail lines), and a group of F40PH-2Cs. It made stops at Old Town (north San Diego), Sorrento Valley, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad Poinsettia and Carlsbad Village enroute. It shares trackage with Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner service and BNSF freight trains. At Oceanside, connections are made to Metrolink, as well as Amtrak, and the relatively new Sprinter DMU to Escondido. Source: NCTD website (http://www.gonctd.com/coaster), and other sources.
