Re: Question about the abandoned LIRR Rockaway Beach ROW

The little league field (RGMVLL) is bordered by Montauk Lower, Rockaway ROW, and the single connector track between the two.
That connecting track has two little spur tracks for freight cars to service the factories on Union Turnpike. Each track was about two car lengths long.
When I was a little kid in the late 70's and early 80's I would go there and throw the switches on those spur tracks. There was an abandoned freight car on one of them. The switches should have been locked so no one got hurt. You can probably see remnants on google satellite.

I couldn't see anything on satellite view, though if the satellite had taken the photo when the leaves were off the trees it might have been different. Hard to say for sure.
It might be possible to see the remnants of the spur tracks from ground level, depending on what kind of access there is. Maybe from the driveway off Woodhaven Blvd. service road leading to the ballfields.
