I'm thinking there was one switch, somewhere south of White Pot Junction/Rego Park. A switch that would allow a westbound/Manhattan bound train to make a reverse move by the tunnel and back southbound towards Rockaway.

There is a switch at Union Turnpike connecting Rockaway Branch to Lower Montauk branch. The track runs between Union Turnpike and 88th Street.
