Re: Question About Pre-1950 Rockaway Beach/Far Rockaway LIRR Service

When I commuted on the West Hempstead branch in the 1980's, it was a dangerous crossing. It was ungated. The 8 car train 907 would overshoot the station by 4 cars, disregarding the 4 to 8 car stop marker before the crossing in order to balance the loads. Passengers would run in front of the train as it approached the station, or they would miss the train.

The trigger for the Franklin Avenue crossing the other way is at the end of the platform. Any train over 4 cars platforms only the rear 4 cars. That means the gates stay down at the crossing for the entire dwell time at Westwood.
