Those were reasons why the Second Avenue Subway and other proposals such as extending the IRT farther down Nostrand Avenue never got started. WWII caused a lot of deferred maintenance along with heavy usage due to gas rationing. As a result most of the older cars were just worn out beyond repair as their useful life span had been exceeded. Power distribution systems also had to be upgraded to support the new cars and longer trains. |
