The rule as described to me when I first started with the TA was that trains passing through Bkln to Manhattan regardless of point of origin are considered northbound. The reason that the Jamaica (QJ) and Myrtle (M) trains were changed to the physical direction southbound was because when operating in the Southern Division they were actually southbound so trains operating towards Stl were termed southbound to eliminate the confusion. The only problem was that when the Jamaica line was truncated to Broad St 24/7, its Manhattan bound direction was never changed back to northbound even though Manhattan bound K trains which were physically northbound on 6 Av continued to be designate northbound towards 57 St. Now that the M is operating to Ctl, leaving Met is once again back to being northbound so there is no reason why the J Lines direction can’t be changed back for the sake of directional consistency along Bway Bkln. Actually, pre Amtrak and M/N days the NYC and NH had a similar situation since NYC trains lvg GCT were westbound while NH trains lvg GCT were eastbound. |
