That was actually unfortunate for the LIRR since even the newest MUs ordered for the 1964 World’s Fair were mechanically state of the art 1930s. The NYC kept up with technology with the first batch of post war MUs circa 1950. While the MUs ordered around the same time as the LIRRs 1964 MUs and almost identical in appearance were compatible with the earlier ones, they were still pretty much state of the art since there were really no significant improvements in MU performance in that time period. The city of NY wasn’t too different since while the state of the art for motor control and braking systems improved drastically with the BMT Multis circa 1935 yet the B of T as late as 1940 insisted on retaining the out of date appearance and technology of the first 1932 R-1s. Even by the time of the R-10s after the war, the city’s car designs were out of date which they actually were at the time the Multis were ordered.
