I wholeheartedly disagree. In 1969/70 I was a vacation relief M/M and had a chance to operate everything that ran on the NYCTS from the Qs up to the R-42s and even the Lo-Vs. While I preferred the prewar equipment over the newer rolling stock I found the R-32s to be the best accelerating and braking of all the SMEEs and definitely smoother and superior to anything that came later from the 38s up to the 42s. The R-38s were definitely the worst braking of the newer cars and especially difficult to graduate to a final smooth stop. The cars would either roll too far or else make a hard stop with even the slightest movement of the brake valve. One of theM/M breaking me in on them described them as having a "10 foot roll." |
