Re: R-42 Retirement Run

As a railfan and R32 fan, I will miss them terribly. I remember them on the intro footage for the Channel 5 news at 10 PM, among other things.

But I do admit that as a practical matter, they need to go- just like the SI ferryboat John F. Kennedy, which I will also miss, and Fishbowl buses. No machine holds up forever, and when the R32s made their return to the C a few weeks ago (I know some are always there), it was obvious some had been brought out of long term storage. The brakes sounded like they were locking up and causing skidding as the trains stopped. Perhaps Train Dude can advise as to what that sound really was- I doubt the TA would run trains that were actually skidding around. The sound was a staccato chopping..

Even as a non-professional (no operating or mechanical experience), I could see and hear how finished the Redbirds were in 2000-2002, the R42s in the last 3 years, and while the R32s don't look quite as bad, I accept that their time is up.
