At one time the A only operated to Lefferts Blvd. and on weekends to get to Rockaway you had to take an HH shuttle train from Euclid Ave. which used the express platforms since the express tracks were not otherwise used on weekends. I remember taking such a trip with my father somewhere around 1959 when we lived in the South Bronx. it seemed like we would never get there! The shuttle train was jam packed and hot. A lot of people still did not own cars in those days and used the subways and buses. We had to pay a second fare when we exited at Beach 36th St. where my aunt and uncle stayed for the summer and a double fare to board for the trip home. We changed trains at Fulton St. for the 5 and if the 5 was too crowded we changed for the 6 at Brooklyn Bridge or Grand Central as we lived within walking distance of both lines near Southern Boulevard.
