Only the original architect the late Squire Vickers, who designed the stations, would have known that answer. Oddly, the original large mosaic tablets at 190th Street and 181st Street, plus the small ones seen on the mezzanines from 175th Street to 207th Street, are said to be considered colored as "burgundy". None of those five stations that I mentioned, plus the 8th Avenue local stations from 163rd Street to 23rd Street, had the stripe tile bands as originally planned and designed.IND Station Tile Colors -William A.
