Re: Amtrak orders 75 new Siemens Diesel locomotives for LD trains

The Brightline cars seem pretty natural successors to the Amfleets...Via is already going with them. I rode them earlier this month and was impressed with them (some photos of the interior... https://www.flickr.com/photos/thelirrtoday/albums/72157674624257607).

These aren't DMU's, though. DMU's are good for short-haul corridors where better acceleration can make a difference, but most of the Midwest and California corridors are already going forward with the Charger locomotives and the new Siemens cars. I don't think it would make too much sense to operate DMU's on the Northeast Corridor, since you would require an electric power to get to NY, and the equipment for a dual mode DMU would probably take up too much seating space inside the car to still fit inside the tunnels. DMU's would be a good fit for the Downeaster, the New Haven-Springfield Shuttle, and probably the Empire Corridor, but I'm not sure of their utility on the Virginia routes.

AC/overhead wire dual modes seem like they would be a decently wise move for the Pennsylvanian and the VA/NC/VT off-corridor services, especially if Amtrak is eyeing an increase in traditional Northeast Regional/Keystone on-corridor electric service and could otherwise repurpose the electric locomotives.

OK/NC/WI(?)/Downeaster can carry on with the Genesis or whatever locomotives they are using now until some part of the LD network gets cleaved off, freeing up some sprinter locomotives.
