I've heard that as well- a guy named Yunich. But I've also read on nycsubway.org that the MTA only reluctantly agreed to the demolition, and that they even toyed with re-opening the stations that closed in 1977 (obviously, while the stations were still intact).

This being NY, I am willing to believe 2 completely contradictory stories.
