I don't think the platform tracks were the big issue.
The issue was how to tie the 63th street tunnel into the tracks without enormous temporary and significant permanent disruptions to MNRR operations.

GCT is a beautiful station with a ton of tracks, but having only 4 tracks in/out with no provisions to add more was a big design flaw.
