You don't make it cheaper than a single one way, you make it cheaper than two one ways. For example Flushing to Jamaica is $8.25 off peak $11.50 peak, while Flushing to Woodside and Jamaica to Woodside are each peak: 10.25, off peak: 7.50.

Without LIRR's via-ticketing a peak journey between Flushing and Jamaica would be $17.75, but with via ticketing it is $11.50.

Metro-North requires the two separate tickets.
