Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sun Oct 14 07:31:16 2018 Tuscarora Almanac - October 14, 1942 - The Book of Wrecks Newfoundland, Canada Newfoundland Railway The Newfoundland Railway passenger ferry "S.S.Caribou" sank in the early morning hours of October 14, 1942 after being struck by a torpedo fired from the German submarine "U-69". The ferry was part of a small local convoy. Her usual route was between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland. 137 passengers and crew died. The "U-69" lasted only for a few more months. On February 17, 1943 she was rammed by the British Destroyer "H.M.S. Fame" and sank with the lost of all hands.
