I think they were pulled because the TA didnít want to deal with articulation. It seems that articulation fell out of favor with transit agencies after WWII as evidenced by the CTAís not wanting to order any more artics, opting instead for married pairs. I canít really say that the R-9s were junk as compared with the D types since they were very similar. The principal reason that the R-1/9s lacked many of the technical amenities of BMT equipment was in all likelihood that those features were under patent to the BMT which the city was initially committed to putting out of business. The city of NY wasnít about to pay a company it was trying to eliminate any royalties which in effect would have helped the BMT.
