I think they were pulled because the TA didn’t want to deal with articulation. It seems that articulation fell out of favor with transit agencies after WWII as evidenced by the CTA’s not wanting to order any more artics, opting instead for married pairs. I can’t really say that the R-9s were junk as compared with the D types since they were very similar. The principal reason that the R-1/9s lacked many of the technical amenities of BMT equipment was in all likelihood that those features were under patent to the BMT which the city was initially committed to putting out of business. The city of NY wasn’t about to pay a company it was trying to eliminate any royalties which in effect would have helped the BMT.
