But I'm focusing on the "throw away several billion dollars" because you feel that 1) the location of the tunnels is bad, 2) they're wasting money on the NY end. However, looking at the probable entrance location on the NJ end, it's not even 1/2 mile away from the current tunnel entrance. The difference between them narrows on the NY end, but that shouldn't account for a huge difference in length. The most likely increase in cost would seem to be from the appropriation of private property. As far as the changes it would require on the NY end, it would be far less intrusive than what you're proposing: It shows the extra tracks basically being added on to the current interlocking, as opposed to tearing up and rerouting existing tracks, which would disrupt service far more and still cost a ton. |
