Yes, it was like that for at least a few years before they instituted the free transfer to the IND. But I'm thinking that earlier (1960s), the Times Square fare control didn't extend that far west, but instead ended just east of the entrance being discussed. Can anyone confirm that? The entrance presumably was where the tiled sign with arrows showing 8th Ave. to the left and 7th Ave. to the right still exists in the south wall of the passageway. A sign like that would make no sense if the only way to get to 8th Ave. was to pay a fare for the Times Square IRT station and then leave fare control on the 8th Ave. end without riding any trains.
