No, that is not it at all. It is only the filth that is holding the wals in place as it is.

Besides the MTA is not responsible for leaking sewers. Somebody will have to fix the sewers first.

IIRC Chambers street is NEAR Canal Street.
IIRC Canal Street was a CANAL before it was a street.
So what they did in fact was to build a subway in the bottom of a canal.

Chambers Street is like onto it (I suppose)in the bottom of a primordial swamp with swamp ooze oozing in by the bucket full, running down the walls, onto the floors and bu to your ankles.

(It doesnt rhyme now, but wait until the tide come in.)
