Perhaps he was being extra cautious because: maybe this is his first fall season operating on the Brighton Express.

Keep in mind most if not all of the express tracks are not used on the weekend, so on Mondays they are extra slick this time of year for most of the AM rush. I know this from talking to B t/O's when I worked the Franklin Shuttle, and that was when the line had slant R40's. The R68A's, which dominate the line, have finicky brakes on dry rail, let alone slimy rail.
