Instead of cinder blocks and tiles (which, I agree, is probably the composition), they could have put a pair of steel fire doors there. That way, the old station could have been used whenever the new station needs to be closed - simply a matter of unlocking and opening the doors. And, (shades of Wallyhorse here), they could have used the old station for Lexington Ave trains, making South Ferry an even more important transfer hub. |
