There are also remarkably few road crossings over and under the Hudson. All traffic still has to squeeze into the Holland, Lincoln (with no Mid-Manhattan Expressway to help) or GWB, and the TZB is far enough outside the NYC city limits to not be viable for people traveling from NJ to Long Island. There were more ferries than bridges or tunnels, in the past; and no car ferries these days.
